Improved Breast Cancer Chemotherapy

A study in France found Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) supplements improved outcomes for metastatic breast
cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
Researchers led by Dr. Philippe Boubnoux from the French Institut
National de la Sante Et de la Recherche Medicale (INSERM) U921 in Tours wrote, “Our data show for the
first time that a dietary intervention targeted on DHA is a feasible approach that has potential to
substantially increase survival in metastatic breast cancer patients treated with chemotherapy.”
DHA, found in fish oil capsules, appears to improve
survival by sensitizing tumours to chemotherapy.
The American Cancer Society (ASC) states that every year about
1.3 million women are diagnosed with breast cancer around the world. The incidence of breast cancer has increased
by about 30 per cent over the past 25 years in the western world while death rates have declined due to improved
detection and treatments.
Study Details
Researchers recruited 25 women with metastatic breast cancer to
participate in their open-label single-arm phase II study. This patient population had a poor prognosis as 68 per
cent had liver metastases in addition to other sites of metastases. As part of their anthracycline-based
chemotherapy regimen women were given additional DHA, 1.8 grams per day, for 2 to 6
months.
Women with the highest DHA levels in their blood
lived an average of 12 months longer than the women with the lowest DHA
levels.
The DHA supplements during chemotherapy were not associated with
any adverse side effects.

Notice that researchers gave the women 1.8 grams of DHA each
day. DHA and EPA are omega-3 fatty acids found in traditional fish oil products. Fish oil omega-3 fatty acids
should be taken with food to increase absorption.
Concentrated DHA doses are available in
Cod Pure Plus or Omega Pure DHA.
