Organophosphate pesticide levels were higher in children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia ( ALL ) than in
non-cancer controls.
Organophosphate pesticides are now found throughout the environment. Due to previous studies
researchers have hypothesized that organophosphates are a risk factor for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
Georgetown University Medical Center and Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC studied children with
ALL and their mothers between January 2005 and January 2008. Environmental exposure was determined by questionnaire
and by urinalysis of pesticide metabolites.
Researchers found more mothers of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (33%) than non- cancer controls (14%)
reported using insecticides in the home.
Organophosphate pesticide levels were higher in children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia ( ALL ) than in
non-cancer controls.
