Colon Cancer Alternative: Omega 3 Supplement Decreases Colon Cancer Risk

• Colon Cancer Alternative: Daily omega 3 oils reduced the number of precancerous colon polyps in people prone to colon cancer. 

 
Fifty patients with a genetic mutation that prompts the development of precancerous polyps in the colon were studied. These precancerous polyps often develop into colon cancer tumors.

Twenty-eight of the patients were randomly assigned to a group that received 2 grams of a highly purified form of omega 3 in capsules, while 27 were give a placebo that did not contain the omega 3.

After 6 months the number of precancerous polyps had increased by almost 10 percent in the placebo group. The number of precancerous polyps had decreased by 12 percent in those taking the omega 3 capsules. That is more than a 22 percent difference.

After the 6 months the polyp size increased by 17 percent among patients taking the placebo. The polyp size decreased by 12.5 percent in the omega-3 capsule group. That is a more than a 29 percent difference.
