Folic aicd supplements may increase the risk of colorectal cancer.A high dose of folic acid increases the risk of colorectal cancer and accelerated aging.

A study of 781 patients compared folate and aspirin in the prevention of pre-cancerous colorectal polyps. After 3 years researchers found high folate levels decreased the activity of tumor-suppressing genes and added 10 years of extra aging to cells in the body.

Researchers state: “These findings suggest that people supplementing with extra folate may be increasing their risk of developing certain cancers and age-related diseases."

Folic Acid taken before and during pregnancy does decrease the risk of birth defects. But, Folic Acid in vitamins may be too strong for some people after child bearing years. Due to genetic issues up to 60% of the population cannot convert Folic Acid found in vitamins and food into the active form 5 methyl-tetrahydrofolate.

Colorectal Cancer Prevention Tip: How do you know if you may have a problem converting Folic Acid into the active 5 methyl-tetrahydrofolate?

  1. Bet a blood test for the MTHFR SNP. If you have the MTHFR SNP you should avoid folic acid supplements and select products with 5 methyl-tetrahydrofolate. This is expensive and hard to find.
  2. Stop taking your B vitamin supplement for 2 months. Get a blood test for Homocysteine. If your Homocysteine level is higher than 7 you may have a genetic problem converting Folic Acid in the safer 5 methyl-tetrahydrofolate. If your homocysteine is above 7 and you have a family or personal history of cancer you should avoid Folic Acid in your supplements and select products with 5 methyl-tetrahydrofolate.

It’s unknown at this time if calcium folinate or folinic acid are safer than Folic Acid.
