Green tea extract lowered PSA and other markers of prostate cancer growth.
Researchers at Louisiana State University gave 26 prostate cancer patients 4 capsules per day of a green tea
extract supplement. The 4 capsules, containing a high amount of polyphenols and catechins, were equivalent to 12
cups of green tea per day. The patients took the supplement for 12 to 73 days. The prostate cancer patients were
scheduled to have their prostate removed. Researchers did blood tests prior to green tea supplement and on the
day of prostate removal surgery.

Cancer markers prostate specific antigen (PSA) decreased by 10.4%, hepatocyte growth factor
(HGF) decreased 18.9% vascular endothelia growth factor (VEGF) decreased 9.9% following the green tea catechins.
Insulin-like growth factor-1, which is associated with poor prostate cancer prognosis and liver function tests also
decreased. Few side effects were reported.

Natural Cancer Treatment Pearl
Researchers did not evaluate other life style changes including diet, supplements and exercise in this
study.
Hopefully future studies will also do a placebo controlled study where some patients get the green tea and some
patients get a non-green tea product.
This study did not measure tumor size. We don’t know if the green tea extract can shrink tumors. At the minimum
it appears that high dose green tea extract may slow the growth of prostate cancer. Researchers are studying the
green tea capsule effect on breast cancer.
Look for a Green Tea Extract that states a specific amount of Polyphenols, Catechins, EGCG and Caffeine. If the
manufacturer does not list the quantity of active ingredients they do not make a quality product.
