Broccoli Extract
Inhibits Growth of Breast Cancer Cells
by Keith D. Bishop, Clinical Nutritionist, B.Sc. Pharmacy - September 10, 2009
-
Sulforaphane, a broccoli extract, inhibited the growth of breast cancer cells in rats and human cell
lines.
Sulforaphane, an isothiocyanate found in cruciferous vegetables has been shown to inhibit the growth of chemically
induced breast cancer tumors in rats. Sulforaphane induces phase 2 liver detoxification enzymes and inhibits the
growth of chemically induced mammary tumors n rats. Phase 2 liver detoxification helps the liver remove toxic
chemicals from the body.
In this study
researchers found that Sulforaphane inhibits breast cancer cell growth, activates apoptosis, inhibits histone deacetylase (HDAC), and decreases the expression of key proteins
involved in breast cancer proliferation in human breast cancer cells.
Researchers state “These results support testing Sulforaphane in vivo and warrant future studies examining the clinical potential of Sulforaphane in
human breast cancer.”

Natural Cancer Reports Pearl:
Sulforaphane helps the liver remove toxic chemicals and heterocyclic amnes from the body. Sulforaphane improves the
removal of heterocyclic amines that come from browning, grilling or burning meats and other foods.
Hamburgers have a very high quantity of heterocyclic amines. A hamburger patty is typically cooked at a very
high temperature. The browning, charring or blackening meat, vegetables and even the smoke contain the toxic
heterocyclic amines.
If you have a personal history of breast, prostate or colon cancer you can take a Sulforaphane capsule with
your meals that contain grilled, broiled, baked or fried foods. You should cook meats at low temperature. Don’t
cook your meat well done or blackened. Use olive oil based marinade on vegetables and
meat prior to cooking to decrease browning.
