Vitamin E Decreases the Risk of Dying of Prostate
Cancer

High alpha-tocopherol ( vitamin E ) blood levels lower the
risk of dying from prostate cancer.
Researchers investigated the alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E)
effect on survival of men diagnosed with prostate cancer. This
was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled primary
prevention trial testing the effect of beta-carotene, retinol
and alpha-tocopherol supplements on cancer incidence in 29,133
adult male smokers in Finland. As of April 2005, 1,891 men were
diagnosed with prostate cancer and 395 died of their
disease.
Higher
alpha-tocopherol blood levels at the beginning of the
study were associated with a 33% improved prostate cancer
survival rate. Highest alpha-tocopherol supplementation
during the trial provided a 49% improved prostate cancer
survival rate.
These findings suggest that higher alpha-tocopherol (and not
beta-carotene or retinol) status increases overall prostate
cancer survival.
