Prostate Cancer Selenium:
Selenium May Intensify Prostate Cancer
Keith D. Bishop, Clinical Nutritionist - July 4,

Higher selenium blood levels may intensify aggressive
prostate cancer in some men who already have the
disease.
Researchers
at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the University of
California, San Francisco studied the relationship between
selenium blood levels and the risk of aggressive prostate
cancer. They found the risk of aggressive prostate cancer
was increased by both the manganese superoxide dismutase
(SOD2) gene and high selenium blood levels.
Researchers state “if you already have
prostate cancer, it may be a bad thing to take
selenium.”

Dismutase, and Intermediate- or High-Risk Prostate Cancer. Chan

This is the first study that raises concerns about this
potentially harmful consequence of taking supplemental
selenium. The previous SELECT prevention study found selenium
did not prevent nor decrease the risk of prostate
cancer.
